A Polymarket whale is a wallet that trades prediction market shares in large amounts, usually thousands of dollars or more in a single position, enough to stand out in the order book and in public trade data. The term refers only to trade size, and plenty of whales lose money.
What does Polymarket whale mean?
On Polymarket, a whale is a wallet that buys or sells outcome shares in amounts far above a typical trade, so its activity is visible in the order book, in market trade feeds and on the leaderboard. There is no official size threshold.
Every Polymarket share is priced between $0 and $1, and a winning share pays $1 when the market resolves. Trades are matched on an order book and settle on the Polygon blockchain, so every wallet's positions are public. Anyone can see what a large wallet bought, at what price and when, which is why traders watch whales.
We only consider a whale's trade worth copying if the wallet put $1,000 or more of its own money into the position. Smaller positions from big wallets can be tests or hedges.
Why do traders watch Polymarket whales?
Every fill on Polymarket is public, so a large trade is a signal anyone can see: someone was willing to put serious money on an outcome at that price.
The signal has limits. You only see the trade after it fills, often after the price has already moved. A big position can be a hedge against something the wallet holds elsewhere. And a wallet's size shows how much it can afford to lose, which says nothing about how often it is right.
How do you spot a Polymarket whale?
- Watch a market's trades. Polymarket's Data API lists recent trades with the wallet, side, price, size and time, so large sizes stand out.
- Check a market's holders, which the same API also lists.
- Open the leaderboard. It ranks wallets by profit or by volume, with Today, Weekly, Monthly and All views.
- Read the wallet's profile page for its open and closed positions, activity, and profit and loss over time.
- Watch the order book. Large resting orders show where big money wants to trade. Polymarket's docs note that large orders may move the price, so a whale filling a big order can leave a visible jump.
None of this needs an account or an API key. Polymarket's Data API is public.
Why does the Polymarket leaderboard mislead?
The leaderboard shows who made the most money or traded the most, and neither measure tells you who is good at trading.
- It ranks by dollars, so a wallet that bets $50,000 per trade can outrank a more accurate wallet that bets $500.
- One trade can be enough. A $100 buy at 1¢ gets 10,000 shares and pays $10,000 if it wins, so a single long shot can put a wallet near the top.
- The day, week and month boards include open positions. Polymarket's Data API docs say they track the change in marked equity, which moves with unrealized gains.
- The board does not show how many trades produced the profit, how deep the drawdowns were, or how much came from one position.
On 30 September 2026, 166 of the 15,371 wallets in our pool passed checks for those gaps. The Polymarket whales data write-up has the full numbers.
Whale tracking vs copy trading: what is the difference?
Whale tracking means watching large wallets and deciding yourself what to do. Copy trading means placing your own orders automatically when a chosen wallet trades, under rules you set in advance.
| Whale tracking | Copy trading | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Watching wallets, feeds and alerts | Automatic orders that follow chosen wallets |
| Who decides each trade | You, one trade at a time | Rules you set before the trade |
| What you need | A trade feed or alerts | Wallet filters, trade filters, size limits and exits |
| Main risk | Acting late, or acting on noise | Copying a wallet's luck along with its skill |
| Money at risk | Only when you choose to trade | On every copy that passes your rules |
Copy trading needs more care than tracking because it places orders without asking you. Our guide to copying Polymarket whales covers how to pick wallets, filter trades, size copies and set exits.
Are Polymarket whales worth following?
Most are not, and the leaderboard will not tell you which ones are. Look for wallets with many settled trades, small drawdowns and profit spread across many positions. Questions people ask
How much money makes someone a whale on Polymarket?
There is no official number, and Polymarket does not label wallets as whales. People usually mean wallets that put thousands of dollars into a single position. For copying, we only count a trade if the wallet put $1,000 or more of its own money into it.
Can anyone see what Polymarket whales are trading?
Yes. Trades and positions settle on the Polygon blockchain and are public. Polymarket's Data API returns any wallet's trades and positions without an API key, and profile pages on polymarket.com show positions, activity and profit and loss.
Do Polymarket whales move prices?
They can. Polymarket's order book has no trade size limits, but its documentation warns that large orders may move the price. A whale buying into a thin market can push the price up as its order fills.
Are Polymarket whales always right?
No. The word only describes the size of a wallet's trades. Many large wallets lose money, and a big win can come from one lucky long shot.
